What is a shot blasting machine used for?
A shot blasting machine is an industrial piece of equipment used for the surface cleaning and pre-treatment of metals. It utilizes an electric motor to drive the impeller of a blast wheel at high speeds; centrifugal force then propels steel shot or grit against the surface of a workpiece. This high-velocity impact removes rust and mill scale, increases surface roughness, and—in certain models—can even be used to strengthen the metal surface.
Primary Functions
1. Removal of rust, mill scale, and welding slag
It clears rust, hot-rolled mill scale, welding residue, and old paint films from the surfaces of steel plates, pipes, structural steel, and castings. Our steel plate pre-treatment lines and pipe shot blasting machines are primarily designed for this purpose, achieving rust-removal grades of Sa2.5 or Sa3.0.
2. Creating optimal surface roughness to enhance paint adhesion
The impact of steel shot creates uniform, microscopic indentations on the metal surface. This allows subsequent primers and anti-corrosive coatings to adhere firmly, preventing the paint film from peeling or flaking. This is an essential step in anti-corrosion processes for steel structures, shipbuilding, offshore engineering, and piping, typically resulting in a surface roughness (Ra) of 6.3–12.5 μm.
3. Metal surface strengthening (shot peening)
For load-bearing components such as springs, crankshafts, and gears, the impact of the shot induces compressive stress in the surface layer. This eliminates internal stress, improves resistance to fatigue and fracture, and extends the service life of the parts.
4. Deburring and removal of adhering sand
It removes sand stuck to the surfaces of castings and eliminates flash or burrs from die-cast parts, resulting in a uniform, matte metallic finish.
Common Industries
Steel structures, shipbuilding, offshore engineering, pressure vessels, steel piping, wind turbine towers, construction machinery, automotive components, and the casting and forging industries. Applicable Workpieces by Machine Type
- Roller-conveyor type (steel plate pre-treatment line): For high-volume, continuous descaling of steel plates and H-beams; can be integrated with automatic painting and drying systems.
- Steel pipe shot-blasting machine: For descaling the outer surfaces of seamless and welded pipes.
- Hook-type shot-blasting machine: For large castings and welded structural components.
- Tumble-belt (crawler-type) shot-blasting machine: For batch cleaning of small castings and small hardware parts.
